We are so glad you asked, a Cumberland Presbyterian is...
The Cumberland Presbyterian Church is an international denomination of protestants in the reformed tradition. We split from the larger Presbyterian Church in 1810 because our founders rejected the idea of "fatalism," or strict predestination. We have a long tradition of trusting and following the Spirit of God even when it is not the popular thing to do. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church thrived on the American frontier in the early 1800's and was the first Presbyterian denomination to ordain a woman in 1889. We embrace both the reformed tradition from which we came and the evangelical tradition that drove us out into the frontier to spread the Good News where it was needed most. We welcome all people and all baptisms from any other denomination as legitimate. People from many theological perspectives and backgrounds have found a home in our denomination, and we hope you will too!
